On Friday, Trinamool Congress MP, Mahua Moitra filed a petition in SC against the Citizenship Amendment Bill.

According to the Hindustan Times, Mahua Moitra filed a petition in SC and asked the top court to hear the case right away. But the request for the urgent hearing was turned down by Chief Justice of India SA Bobde who directed the lawmaker to approach the court officer who looks at cases to be mentioned before the bench.

The bill, which seeks to provide Indian citizenship to non-Muslim refugees from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who faced religious persecution there, was cleared by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday evening. The opposition has termed the bill discriminatory.

This is the second petition to reach the Supreme Court. Before, the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) filed a petition on Thursday claiming that the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2019, passed by the Parliament on Wednesday, violates Article 14 of the Constitution.
